Manon Servage x Sophie Quay

Gathering Rhythms

Gathering Rhythms is an exciting innovative contemporary quartet co-choreographed and directed by Sophie Quay and Manon Servage.

When layers of our being unfold, shed and dissolve, what essence remains at our core? Gathering Rhythms is an ode to the journey towards sincerity and thus the revelation of our shared humanity. Bodies collide, souls converge and  minds synchronise in a rallying dance that transcends the individual to the collective.

Premiered in Ballet Nights New Voices at the Ministry of Sound London.

The final performance in the first half is an ingenious combination of the two that preceded it. Introducing the piece, Devernay-Laurence highlighted how the four dancers come from different backgrounds and that this piece was a combination of all their styles. Gathering Rhythms is bold and verges effortlessly into the avant-garde with great care given to every aspect of the performance. From the way they move in their colourful costumes to the lighting, and interact with the music by Amiina, to how they connect with one another, choreographers Servage and Quay have created something unique and touching. There is an understanding given to the individual, with each performer afforded a moment in the light before all four performers make their way to the club floor. Much like Your Ghost, Servage and Quay use the space to split our view with three of the four dancers appearing on the bar behind the audience. As they jump down and begin walking through the tightly packed crowd, another unique element is given to the piece. They appear as Gods coming down from Mount Olympus, walking through a crowd looking on them in awe, the mystic of their performance, their movement, paused briefly as they all us to savour this rare gift.

Closing the first section was Gathering Rhythms choreographed and danced by Manon Servage and Sophie Quay, who were joined by fellow dancers Zach Parkin and Ivan Merino Gaspar. JDL - compering as usual - said the piece was developed over a two-week period, and if this is the case, Ballet Nights should take Servage and Quay very seriously. The content was fresh and origianal with a sophisticated structure, executed extremely well and featured intelligent use of costuming as an additional choreographic layer. simply it took the evening where it needed to be - the crowd was pumped and properly engaged by the end.

Next were four dancers in Gathering Rhythms, by Manon Servage and Sophie Quay who were joined in the space by Zach Parkin and Ivan Merino Gaspar. Somehow managing through a series of bendy movements, to switch jackets with one another, this was clever if not completely absorbing.

One of the standout pieces was Gathering Rhythms, choreographed by Manon Servage and Sophie Quay, and performed by Zach Parkin and Ivan Gaspar. This performance thoughtfully incorporated the club's environment, utilising various focal points, including the bar, and playing with light and costume to enhance its motifs.
